Why are we studying religion?
The world's major religions are a significant topic in Indiana's 7th grade social studies curriculum. The Eastern World, which is the focus of this class, is the birthplace of Christianity, Judaism, Islam, Buddhism, and Hinduism. As we cover these religions, it is our goal to gain a better understanding of their beliefs and characteristics. By doing so, we hope that students understand that all of these religions share similar core values that contradict negative images portrayed in mass media.
What will students be doing for this unit?
This unit will consist of four benchmarks and the novel Have a Little Faith by Mitch Albom. The benchmarks, or "major" assignments, consist of writing and presenting a eulogy, composing a book review of Have a Little Faith, creating an advertisement for our Tolerance Tour, and developing the tour to teach our community about the world's major religions. For more information regarding these benchmarks or the novel, click on the drop-down buttons under "The Tolerance Project" tab.
How will my student be graded during this project?
For this project, grades will be based on individual achievement as well as group performance. As with past projects, group grades will be a fraction of a student's overall grade, but group collaboration and cooperation can impact a student's individual success. Individual and group assignments are outlined below.
